NOIA Applauds “A Better Way” for Delivering Affordable and Reliable American Energy

Washington, D.C.NOIA President Randall Luthi issued the following statement today after Speaker Ryan released the third plank of “A Better Way”:

“NOIA applauds Speaker Ryan, Chairman Bishop and other members of the Task Force on Reducing Regulatory Burdens on their blueprint for regulatory and legislative reforms that would deliver affordable and reliable homegrown energy to American consumers and strengthen our energy security.

“While the lifting of the oil export embargo last year was a step in the right direction, a politically imposed embargo on domestic production still persists for 87% of federal offshore areas. The President’s decision to cancel the proposed oil and natural gas lease sale off our south Atlantic coast sacrificed tremendous potential for future employment, economic opportunity and energy security; and his administration continues to slow-walk the permitting process for seismic surveys of the area.

“The offshore oil and natural gas sector is under unprecedented regulatory assault as the Obama administration rushes to finalize rules on well control, air quality, financial assurance and Arctic operations; these rules threaten the future of offshore energy production.

“In a political climate rife with hyperbolic rhetoric, unsubstantiated claims and naïve calls to keep it in the ground, “A Better Way” lays out legislative solutions for improving our nation’s economy and reducing regulatory burdens, particularly in the oil and natural gas sector.

“Rewriting the Five Year Plan, allowing the Interior Secretary to add new lease sales, streamlining a sluggish federal permitting process -- including permitting for seismic research -- and increasing the transparency and accountability of regulations would stimulate the safe and environmentally responsible development of our valuable offshore energy resources and would help put our country back on the path to energy reliability and self-sufficiency.”
