NOIA Welcomes Progress on Senate Energy Bill

Washington, D.C. – NOIA President Randall Luthi released the following statement after the Senate voted to join the House of Representatives in a conference committee on the Energy Policy Modernization Act:

“NOIA applauds the Senate for appointing conferees and voting to go to conference with the House of Representatives on the bipartisan S. 2012, the Energy Policy Modernization Act. At a time when Congress is perceived as accomplishing little, it is gratifying to see that progress is being made on what could be the first comprehensive energy bill passed in nearly a decade.

“Much has changed since Congress passed its last energy bill in 2007. Through ingenuity and hard-work, the U.S. is now the global leader in oil and natural gas production, and with the right federal policies is well-positioned to retain this title for the foreseeable future. Today, less than 50 percent of oil the U.S. uses is imported. This means consumers can count on affordable, reliable and safe energy that is produced right here at home. The energy sector helped American families get back to work after the last economic crisis and continues to provide jobs for millions of Americans today. Revenues from offshore oil and gas operations fund coastal restoration, hurricane protection, flood prevention and other vital programs. It is imperative that U.S. energy policy reflect the modern energy landscape in order to protect U.S. energy security and development.

“NOIA commends Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chair Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-WA) for their leadership in moving the Senate energy bill forward. NOIA looks forward to working with Congress throughout the conference committee process with the goal of producing strong, bipartisan energy legislation that will continue U.S. energy leadership in the years to come.”
