Houma Today: Oil and gas are too important to ignore

The oil and gas industry is a powerful cog in south Louisiana economic engine.

But it is also a strong component of the U.S. economy and a large factor in our nation’s energy strategy.

In that it makes us less dependent on nations that officially hate the U.S., the domestic energy industry also contributes to our national security.

Clearly, the oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico has a significance that stretches far beyond the Gulf Coast, but it is here where its importance is most recognized and appreciated.

Unfortunately, that is not the case everywhere.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is taking public comments on its five-year plan for energy exploration in the Gulf.

The Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors last week voted to submit a letter in defense of oil and gas.
