NOIA Applauds Statements by Virginia Leaders on Offshore Energy
Statement of NOIA President Tom Fry
WASHINGTON, DC – National Ocean Industries Association President Tom Fry today issued the following statement in response to the letter sent by Senators Mark Warner and Jim Webb to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.
“NOIA and its member companies applaud the stand taken today by the Senators Webb and Warner from Virginia, along with an earlier letter from Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, in calling on the Secretary of the Interior to expedite steps for exploration and development of offshore oil and gas resources in the Atlantic Ocean.
“Over the past five years, numerous political leaders in Virginia’s state house, the Governor’s mansion and among the delegation in Congress have repeatedly expressed a desire to see the offshore energy resources of their state opened to development. In recognition of this fact, every possible effort should be undertaken by the Department of the Interior to see that the already-scheduled Lease Sale 220 go forward as scheduled.
“NOIA encourages Senators Webb and Warner and Governor McDonnell to continue to press for timely permitting of the much-needed energy resources off their state’s shores.”

Statement of NOIA President Tom Fry on
Virginia Governor (elect) Bob McDonnell’s Letter to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar
WASHINGTON, DC – “The National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) wholeheartedly applauds Virginia Governor (elect) Bob McDonnell for his letter to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar clearly urging that Virginia be kept in the Department’s current 5 Year Oil and Gas Leasing Plan and a lease sale offshore Virginia be completed.
“America cannot have increased energy supply without increased access, and new areas of the Outer Continental Shelf cannot be leased unless they are included in 5-Year Leasing Plan and sales are scheduled. None of this can happen until the necessary environmental reviews are conducted, and we urge the Interior Department to begin this important work as soon as possible.
“Virginia could be the first area of the Atlantic OCS formerly under moratorium to be leased in nearly 30 years. Offshore leases in Virginia would provide new jobs, new federal and state revenue, and new energy for America.
“NOIA and our member companies look forward to working with the State of Virginia and the Department of Interior to help this become a reality.”

NOIA Hopeful Cape Wind Project Will Proceed
Statement of NOIA President Tom Fry
WASHINGTON, DC – The following is a statement by NOIA President Tom Fry regarding the Interior Department’s final review of the Cape Wind project in Nantucket Sound.
"When it comes to the fate of the complex and long-planned Cape Wind project in Nantucket Sound, the National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) agrees that after nearly a decade of multiple reviews and seemingly endless legal challenges, it is indeed time for a final permitting decision on the project.
"Like the Obama Administration and the majority of the American public, NOIA strongly supports the development of offshore renewable energy sources. Renewable energy development on the Outer Continental Shelf would add to the overall diversity of the nation's energy sources and could help generate new jobs in a developing sector.
"We are hopeful that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's final decision will be agreeable to all concerned parties and will allow the project to move forward without any further delay.
"As the first offshore wind farm proposed in federal waters, the ultimate fate of Cape Wind, will set an example for all such projects to come. This is not simply one decision concerning one project. It could be an indication of the permitting environment the entire renewable energy sector could face as it tries to expand. We hope the Secretary will use this decision to set an example that is a positive one."
