Biden Administration Can Jump Start Wind Opportunities in the New York Bight and Beyond

Washington, D.C. – National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) President Erik Milito issued the following statement after members of the New York and New Jersey delegations issued a letter asking the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to advance offshore wind lease opportunities in the New York Bight region:

“BOEM should issue the final Wind Energy Areas (WEA) and hold lease auctions in the New York Bight as quickly as possible. The U.S. needs a post-COVID economic recovery and holding an offshore wind lease sale in the New York Bight is a significant step towards a tremendous energy and economic opportunity.

“BOEM should seize on the momentum from a New York Bight lease auction and issue a reliable inventory of regularly scheduled offshore wind auctions, along with the ability to develop those resources. It has been more than two years since the most recent offshore wind lease auction. A regular and predictable offshore lease schedule is critical to maintain the level of certainty that wind developers need as they plan substantial investments into the American offshore.

“NOIA thanks Representatives Kathleen Rice (NY-4) and Bill Pascrell (NJ-9) for their leadership within Congress and with the Administration in advancing new wind opportunities. NOIA and NOIA members will continue to work to advance our offshore wind industry.”
