Crowley Maritime is a U.S.-owned and operated marine solutions, energy and logistics services company. Crowley has six primary business lines from which it provides a multitude of services for commercial and government customers: Puerto Rico liner services, international liner services, worldwide logistics, marine contract solutions; deep sea petroleum transportation; and petroleum transportation, distribution and sales in Alaska.
Crowley was founded in 1892, when founder Thomas Crowley — the grandfather of current chairman and CEO Thomas B. Crowley Jr. — purchased an 18-foot Whitehall boat to provide transportation of personnel and supplies to ships anchored on San Francisco Bay. The present structure, in which Crowley Maritime Corporation serves as a holding company for business lines and all subsidiaries, was put in place in 1992.
Today, the company generates more than $2 billion in annual revenue. Crowley has approximately 5,300 employees and a fleet of 200 vessels. These vessels include RO/RO (roll-on-roll-off) vessels, LO/LO (lift-on-lift-off) vessels, articulated tug-barges (ATBs), tugs and barges. The company is still wholly and privately owned by the Crowley family and Crowley employees.
Supporting the energy industry, Crowley has built long-term relationships with many of the world’s most respected energy companies, providing them with creative solutions to both upstream and downstream challenges. Crowley provides exploration and production support operations worldwide – from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico to Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East to Brazil and West Africa. Serving the offshore segment, Crowley offers ocean towing, heavy lift barge transportation, liquefied natural gas services, logistics, and offshore engineering and project management for these projects.
Helping energy companies move crude, refined and LNG product to market, Crowley provides bulk petroleum and chemical transportation with one of the largest U.S.-flag fleets of tank vessels; tanker assist and escort services; ship management; fuel transportation, distribution and sales throughout Alaska; containerized LNG transportation and distribution in the Caribbean Basin and Alaska; marine salvage and wreck removal through its 50 percent ownership of Ardent Global, and vessel design and construction management services.
