New oil spill response system is leaner- even at 50 tons

At 50 tons and 30 feet tall, the smaller capping stack in the Marine Well Containment Co.’s arsenal still isn’t exactly tiny. But this newest offering, announced on Wednesday, is designed to be more easily used in smaller spaces, where bigger capping stacks would be a tight squeeze.

While the svelte new version is capable of withstanding as much as 10,000 pounds of pressure per square inch, it has a 9-foot-by-9-foot footprint. By contrast, a larger capping stack rated for 15,000 pounds of pressure per square inch is 14-foot wide and weighs twice as much.
